Liverpool Coastguard received a 999 call from a member of the public stating that they were watching a yacht that seemed to be stuck under the Jubilee Bridge. The yacht was jammed under the bridge by it's mast but the informant was unsure if any one was onboard the vessel. The tide was still rising and the situation could have become dangerous as time progressed.

Walney CRT were tasked to the scene for safety cover and the MCA vessel Peregrine was tasked by Liverpool MRSC to investigate the scene to check that no individuals were on the vessel.

Peregrine checked the vessel and established no persons were on board, the vessel was towed to a safe mooring which was a difficult task as a large length of heavy mooring chain was still attached to the vessel.

After securing the vessel Cumbria Police informed the owner of the situation
At 0315 hrs Walney CRT and MCA Peregrine were stood down.

Two Walney CRT members were working for another agency in the area of Foulney, they were observing a number of mussel pickers, 13 in number in this area picking the shell fish.(GR 243636) It was observed that two of the quad bikes in use had broken down and that the tide was due to turn at approx 1721hrs local and was a 8.9 metre tide.

The CRT members informed Liverpool Coastguard that the 13 men were in the area and intended to keep an eye on the individuals as some of the equipment used was in very poor condition. Fishery staff towed one of the quad bikes to a safe and dry area and watched the harvesters and the incoming tide. The mussels had been shuttled to the north side of Foulney (approx GR248 647)  and then again shuttled to the start point at Roosbeck on the coast road some 2 miles from the mussel bed.

As the tide came in CRT members were concerned that the process of shuttling the shell fish would be tight as the tide came toward the point where the mussels were stacked. The last sack of shell fish was removed just as the tide came toward the area concerned. All were safe but questions had to be asked about the condition of the equipment and the time allowed to get out of the area concerned.

It should be noted that not all the shell fishermen left the site late, most were in good time and would not have been in danger, the possibility of the few putting themselves at risk did concern CRT members and fishery officers on the scene as well as some of the poor quality transport.

Possibly a future incident waiting to happen!!

It was determined that there was actually 6 Kayakers in the area, but none in difficulty. The ILB crew decided that in the interests of safety to take all 6 to Roa Island. It was noted the kayakers had not enough lifejackets and a lack of other vital safety equipment. The CRT gave out some very strong safety advice.

The MCA Boat Peregrine upon arrival rescued the two, aged 19 and 20 and from the Barrow area, and transported them back to shore to a waiting ambulance to be checked over suffering from the effects of the cold water.
