22 May 17:00 to 18:30 Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT, MCA Peregrine, Job: 17 PAID - Persons appear in difficulty - Liverpool MRCC received a 999 call stating that a large number of young people were becoming cut off by the tide at the Northern End of Walney Channel,close to the meetings, where the tide approaches from the north and the south.Walney CRT were tasked to the scene along with the Maritime and Coastguard Vessel Peregrine. On arrival of the CRT it was noted that some of the 10 individuals aged between 14 and 18 had forded the gully to get to safety at Pallas Nook. The rest followed a short time later. Coastguards along with Cumbria Police took details and offered advice to the young people who were foolhardy. Although this was not the highest of tides (7.9mts) high water had still some time to go (1932 local). This was a serious incident which could have ended with tragic consequences. Shortly after this incident returning coastguards were directed by a member of the public to youths who were "Tombestoneing" off the bullnose close to the Barrow Dock Museum. Coastguards attended the scene and tried to give advice with regards to the dangers of jumping into the shallow water. They were met with swearing and abuse. Cest la vie!! Read more 09 May 09:00 to 10:00 BST Location: Walney Channel SAR Units: Walney CRT Job: 16 FLRT - Flare report telephone - Liverpool Coastguard received a 999 call indicating that a red flare had been sighted over the area of Roosecote Sands and Cavendish Dock. Walney CRT were tasked to the area to investigate and enquiries were made with dog walkers,the Barrow Pilot Boat and Walney Wind Farm Security, all indicated that they had seen nothing. A short static visual watch was kept over the area with no further sightings. It was agreed to stand down the CRT with the possibility of a gas flare off at the Centrica Onshore Gas Terminal. 08 May 12:12 to 13:15 BST Location: Roanhead, Duddon Estuary SAR Units: Walney CRT, Cumbria Ambulance, Helimed 72 Job: 15 PINJ - Person Injured - Walney CRT called to assist Ambulance personnel to extract male who had sustained afractured ankle whilst walking. The male was a First Aider/ Supervisor for a school party visiting the area from Hull. He fell in a remote area of the dunes. He was initially assisted by the ambulance crew, and carried to the beach area for extraction, to Furness General Hospital, by the Air Ambulance |
